The English Electric Lightning was Britain’s supersonic interceptor of the Cold War era and the only all-British Mach 2 fighter aircraft. It was designed, developed, and manufactured by English Electric, which was subsequently absorbed by the newly-formed British Aircraft Corporation.
The Lightning F.1 was the first mark of this RAF iconic fighter of the sixties to enter service. Mainly a pictorial study with over 120 photographs (for less than 50 aircraft built), this book gives a good overview of the camouflage and markings worn by this mark until being withdrawn from use in the early seventies after about a decade of service.

The EE Canberra is probably one of the most iconic British aircraft of the first Cold War years. It was declined in various marks, and this book is devoted to the intruder version, the B.8 which was used by the RAFG in West Germany between the end of 1950s to the early 1970s. This is mainly a pictorial study of this mark in over 110 photographs, many in colour, and seven colour profiles. The full RAF register is included and a photo or more of each aircraft is published as far as possible, describing in the same time the evolution of the camouflage and markings. A short chapter on the exports is also included.

Often forgotten, the last mark of the Sptfire F.24 played its role in this unstable post-war era even if it hasn’t been engaged in any combat. Its presence in Hong Kong, while the Communist China had been proclaimed, was not only symbolic.

Turret equipped fighters became operational with the Royal Air Force during WW2 as the result of the British Government’s ongoing concern about German aerial attacks on the United Kingdom during World War One. The possibility of enemy bombers, and not just German ones, once again flying over the country and dropping their deadly load on British soil had troubled them ever since. In the 1930s a fighter fitted with a gun turret was considered to be an effective way of attacking bombers and would be a feasible alternative to conventional fighters. The result of this concept was the Defiant, which was developed to meet this operational requirement. After a promising start during the dark days of the Battle of France the Defiant was withdrawn from day operations, after having sustained heavy losses, during the Battle of Britain. This first part is dedicated to the Defiant and narrates its development as a day fighter. Although the concept proved a failure, the blame does not rest solely on that Defiant, the easy way taken by some writers in the past, as other factors contributed to its failure. Over 30 photographs, some seen for the first time.

The RAF’s Fortress Mk.Is were unique in at least one way, they were the first Boeing B-17s to see action during WW2. This was made possible by two different but complementary requirements. The British were looking for another way to bomb Germany and Occupied Europe by day and the Americans would be pleased to see how their bombing strategy would work out, and the limits of this strategy, which the B-17 had been designed to perform. The Americans, who were always in the background of the European evaluation, and also in the Middle East, played a vital role in the RAF’s operational trials in 1941.
The results were poor and most of the lessons learned were simply ignored but here in 40 pages the full career of the Fortress I is recalled. Illustrated with 35 photos, some seen for the first time, this booklet gives historians all they need to know about the Fortress I. Also included are three colour profiles.

The Grumman FF, even if it is not particularly well known, is important in that it was the start a long dynasty of carrier-based fighters for the USN which included the famous WW2 Hellcat, the Panther and Cougar of the Korean War and the F-14 Tomcat of the Cold War era. It was also the first USN fighter to use a retractable landing gear. The full history of this two-seat fighter, of which less than 30 examples were produced, is narrated in 40 pages. Its career as a fighter was short with only one front line USN unit operating it for just three years. However it had a longer career as a fighter trainer and was not withdrawn from use until 1942. Each aircraft history is fully documented and the publication is illustrated by over 30 photographs and 9 colour profiles. This is a good reference for historians and modellers alike.

After the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbour the Pacific based squadrons of RNZAF began to receive modern US warplanes. Under the command of Squadron Leader T.J. McLean de Lange, No.25 Squadron was created on 31 July 1943, as the RNZAF’s sole SBD Dauntless dive bomber squadron. In March 1944, No.25 began operations on Guadalcanal; objective Rabaul. In eight weeks 530 sorties were flown for the loss of only five aircraft. However, due to the outdated nature of the Dauntless, the Squadron was disbanded at the end of May and surviving pilots transferred to RNZAF Corsair squadrons.
Unlike most RNZAF squadrons, each Dauntless was allocated to an individual crew, so most sported large personal markings of which most have been represented in this short book. No.5 in the Allied Wings series is 36 pages long and richly illustrated of 30 photos plus 12 colour profiles.

The BT-1 belongs to the category of warplanes which just missed, in this case by a couple of weeks, having an operational role in WW2 and has for all practical purposes been forgotten. Nevertheless its importance was probably higher than is currently recognised for at least two reasons. Designed by Ed Heinemann the BT-1 was sufficiently successful to allow him to go on to design such aircraft as the Boston/Havoc, Invader and Skyhawk, some of America’s most famous aircraft. Despite its shortcomings, including a deadly spin, the BT-1 led the way to its successor, the SBD Dauntless, which wrote itself into the pages of the USN’s history during the desperate, and decisive, battles of 1942 and 1943 which took place in the Pacific.
