AW02: Martin Marauder Mk. I

This title is now replaced by SQUADRONS! No. 13 – The Martin Marauder Mk. I, and updated and revised version.

Even though the history of the Marauder is generally  pretty well known, the history of the Marauder Mk.I has been overshadowed for many reasons, the main one being that only 71 Marauders received the designation of Marauder Mk.I. With so few aircraft only one unit could be equipped with this type and this was No.14 Squadron in the Middle East.

Manned by aggressive aircrew, coming from all the Dominions, the Marauder Mk.I was used for two years in the unexpected role of maritime reconnaissance. Sorties were normally flown by a single aircraft and the Marauder Mk.I recorded an impressive record against the Luftwaffe,  showing that the aircraft was able to defend itself and was far from being an easy prey, but sustaining heavy losses with 25 aircraft lost on operations.

56 pages, more than 40 photographs, some published for the first time, six colour profiles.

AW04: Westland Whirlwind Mk. I

page-Whirwind

The Westland Whirlwind belongs to that category of aircraft which entered production but failed to live up to their designers’ expectations. Its unreliable engines can be seen as a major reason for this but it only serves to hide other serious problems. Indeed, even with better engines the results would probably have been the same, as the concept of a twin-engined fighter aircraft capable of meeting single-engined fighters escorting bombers formations on an equal footing was fallacious, as combat in WW2 was soon to prove. The true story of the Whirwind and the pilots who flew it is here told in 52 pages with almost 50 photographs, many being published for the first time.10 colour profiles.

AW12: The Curtiss SB2C Helldiver in French Service

page_aw12

The Curtiss SB2C participated in the last two years of the war in the Pacific and was one of the major combat aircraft in the USN inventory in 1945. With the War’s end these aircraft were soon relegated to second line units, but against all expectations the Helldiver had not fought its last war. A few years later, wearing French Navy markings, the Helldiver was used in Indochina where the French had been involved in combat with the Vietnamese communists and nationalists since 1946. Delivered under MDAP agreement they arrived in the area in 1951 and the Helldiver proved once again that it was a very capable aircraft. They were used intensively over a three year period including the decisive battle of Dien Bien Phu, which heralded the end of French control of Indochina. This is an exciting and informative publication for anyone interested in the SB2C Helldiver. 28 pages, plus three page of colour artwork, over 50 photos.

AW11: Curtiss F11C/BFC & BF2C

Page AW11

The Curtiss F11C was one of the last attempts by the Curtiss Corporation to remain a major supplier of fighters to the USN after the introduction into service of the Boeing F4B. Although Curtiss was still selling other types of aircraft to the USN, mainly observation or training aircraft, the absence of a Curtiss fighter in the front line units diminished the company’s prestige. The Curtiss F11C was developed with this goal in mind but it was not a new design, simply an improvement on a previous Curtiss type, and it too eventually proved to be unsuccessful. Shortly after the beginning of its career the Curtiss F11C was converted into a dive-bomber, and designated the BFC, and they remained in service until 1939. Its successor, the Curtiss BF2C, was also a failure and the Curtiss F11C/BFC can be seen as the last true fighter supplied by the manufacturer to the USN. As with the other USN titles of this series this publication includes each aircraft’s history, with full accident reports, which makes it the best reference for modellers and historians alike. 24 pages, plus 3 pages of colour artwork (13 colour profiles), over 30 photos.

AW09: The North American B-25 in RAAF service

page_aw09

The B-25 Mitchell was one of the most numerous medium bombers used in WW2, and it fought with three major users, the Americans, the Soviets and the British. However other countries received Mitchells during the war and amongst these was Australia which took 50 aircraft on charge, most of which came from Dutch orders. They were used by a single unit, No.2 Squadron, during the war in the Pacific. With over 30 photographs, some seen for the first time, 4 colour profiles, most with wonderful nose art, the full story of the B-25 in Australian service is narrated. This includes their full operational records and is a very good reference for modellers and historians. 28 pages, plus one page of colour artwork, over 30 photos.

AW16: Short Singapore Mk.III

page_aw16-1

The Short Singapore if not built in large numbers, remains an essential flying-boat in the RAF inventory. Indeed the experience gathered during its service with the RAF had led Short to design the Sunderland which played a major role in the general reconnaissance duty during WW2. This book tells its story.

34 pages, plus 4 pages of colour artwork (14 colour profiles), over 55 photos.

AW15: Grumman SF

page-SF

The Grumman SF is the scout version of the Grumman FF (see Allied Wings # 6). If its role is completely different from the Grumman FF which was a fighter, it was technically very close to and had a similar career. Indeed, after a very brief use in a single operational unit, the VS-3B on the USS Lexington, the SF-1 experienced a much longer but discreet career with reserve units of the USN or the USMC and this, well after Pearl Harbor.

This booklet of 22 pages (printing-on-demand) details the history of this little known aircraft and includes over thirty photographs and a fourteen colour profiles. As with the other USN titles of this series this publication includes each aircraft’s history, with full accident reports, which makes it the best reference for modellers and historians alike.

22 pages, plus 3 pages of colour artwork (14 colour profiles), over 30 photos.
