SQUADRONS! No.01: The Supermarine Spitfire Mk VI

S-01

The Spitfire Mk.VI is probably the less known fighter variant of this famous British fighter, and was disliked by most of the pilots who flew it.However, dispite this, the Mk.VI did the job the pilots asked the Mk.VI to do, and even if the association with the 616 has been a disaster, the association with the 124 hasn’t been that bad, far to be. This study of 32 pages, (plus two printable posters) is detailing the true story of the Mark, with new and unpublished material.

AW08: Boulton-Paul Defiant, Pt-1

This title is currently not available in electronic format.

Turret equipped fighters became operational with the Royal Air Force during WW2 as the result of the British Government’s ongoing concern about German aerial attacks on the United Kingdom during World War One. The possibility of enemy bombers, and not just German ones, once again flying over the country and dropping their deadly load on British soil had troubled them ever since. In the 1930s a fighter fitted with a gun turret was considered to be an effective way of attacking bombers and would be a feasible alternative to conventional fighters. The result of this concept was the Defiant, which was developed to meet this operational requirement. After a promising start during the dark days of the Battle of France the Defiant was withdrawn from day operations, after having sustained heavy losses, during the Battle of Britain. This first part is dedicated to the Defiant and narrates its development as a day fighter. Although the concept proved a failure, the blame does not rest solely on that Defiant, the easy way taken by some writers in the past, as other factors contributed to its failure. Over 30 photographs, some seen for the first time.

AW07: Boeing Fortress Mk.I

This title won’t be available in electronic format as being now replaced by another titl – SQUADRONS! No.4 – a revised edition of AW07 with new photos and new material.

The RAF’s Fortress Mk.Is were unique in at least one way, they were the first Boeing B-17s to see action during WW2. This was made possible by two different but complementary requirements. The British were looking for another way to bomb Germany and Occupied Europe by day and the Americans would be pleased to see how their bombing strategy would work out, and the limits of this strategy, which the B-17 had been designed to perform. The Americans, who were always in the background of the European evaluation, and also in the Middle East, played a vital role in the RAF’s operational trials in 1941.
The results were poor and most of the lessons learned were simply ignored but here in 40 pages the full career of the Fortress I is recalled. Illustrated with 35 photos, some seen for the first time, this booklet gives historians all they need to know about the Fortress I. Also included are three colour profiles.

AW06: Grumman FF

The Grumman FF, even if it is not particularly well known, is important in that it was the start a long dynasty of carrier-based fighters for the USN which included the famous WW2 Hellcat, the Panther and Cougar of the Korean War and the F-14 Tomcat of the Cold War era. It was also the first USN fighter to use a retractable landing gear. The full history of this two-seat fighter, of which less than 30 examples were produced, is narrated in 40 pages. Its career as a fighter was short with only one front line USN unit operating it for just three years. However it had a longer career as a fighter trainer and was not withdrawn from use until 1942. Each aircraft history is fully documented and the publication is illustrated by over 30 photographs and 9 colour profiles. This is a good reference for historians and modellers alike.
