ALLIED WINGS SERIES > No.4 : Whirlwind I

Image

The Westland Whirlwind belongs to that category of aircraft which entered production but failed to live up to their designers' expectations. Its unreliable engines can be seen as a major reason for this but it only serves to hide other serious problems. Indeed, even with better engines the results would probably have been the same, as the concept of a twin-engined fighter aircraft capable of meeting single-engined fighters escorting bombers formations on an equal footing was fallacious, as combat in WW2 was soon to prove. The true story of the Whirwind and the pilots who flew it is here told in 52 pages with almost 50 photographs, many being published for the first time.10 colour profiles.

 AEROPLANE MONTHLY - DECEMBER 2008

The fourth title in this series of monographs spolights Westland's attractive but troubled twin-engined fighter, provinding a brief development history but concentrating on its operational service with Nos.137 and 263 Sqns, RAF, from 1940 to 1943. There are plenty of accounts of combat actions, including attacks against ground and sea targets. A good collection of illustrations supports the text and tabulated data on deliveries, serials, sorties, claims, losses and operational use. Modellers will doubtless find some inspiration in the five pages containing two colour side elevations apiece. As ever, the value for money is very good, and this will make a good companion to the database feature on the aircraft which appeared in Aeroplane, May 2006.
