With additional Czech pilots arriving from France during the summer of 1940 the RAF decided, after the formation of No.310 (Czech) Squadron, to establish a second Czech fighter unit as No.312 Squadron. It quickly gained operational status and participated in the last phase of the Battle of Britain before experiencing all the ups and downs of Fighter Command’s activities over the following years. It was briefly part of the 2nd TAF and took part in the D-Day landings. During its existence 145 pilots served with the squadron.

This is a companion to the No.310 Squadron book and has 75 photos and 10 colour profiles showing the various types used during five years. 96 pages.

 AEROPLANE MONTHLY - MAY 2008

The latest volume in the growing series on the Second World War histories of RAF fighter squadrons spotlights a unit with an interesting history. Formed on August, 29, 1940, 312 Sqn consisted principally of Czechoslovakian pilots, most of whom had previously served with the French fighter units GC 1/5 and GC II/5, the GC standing for Groupe des Cigognes, or Strock Wing, which had inherited the stock emblems of their predecessor First World War fighter squadrons. Thus 312 Sqn had very elegant "stock volant" as the emblem in its badge, and, although this did not find its way on to the squadron's first aircraft type, Hawker Hurricanes, it did adorn some of its later Supermarine Spitfires.
This well-illustrated compact history contains a potted of the unit, brief biographies of its pilots, many tables of data regarding claims, losses, operations and suchlike, plus four colour artwork side elevations of Hurricanes and eight of various marks of Spitfire. An ample supply of photographs of pilots and machines is interspersed throughout. Good value as usual.
