Formed on August, 29, 1940, 312 Sqn consisted principally of Czechoslovakian pilots, most of whom had previously served with the French fighter units GC 1/5 and GC II/5, the GC standing for Groupe des Cigognes, or Strock Wing, which had inherited the stock emblems of their predecessor First World War fighter squadrons. Thus 312 Sqn had very elegant "stock volant" as the emblem in its badge, and, although this did not find its way on to the squadron's first aircraft type, Hawker Hurricanes, it did adorn some of its later Supermarine Spitfires. This well-illustrated compact history contains a potted of the unit, brief biographies of its pilots, many tables of data regarding claims, losses, operations and suchlike, plus four colour artwork side elevations of Hurricanes and eight of various marks of Spitfire. An ample supply of photographs of pilots and machines is interspersed throughout. Good value as usual. Philip JARRETT |
