FAMOUS SQUADRONS SERIES > No.310 (Czech) Sqn

Image

No.310 (Czechoslovak) Squadron was among the first of the foreign volunteer squadrons to be formed during the summer of 1940. In June 1940, many Czechoslovakian pilots who had been fighting with the French decided to escape to the United Kingdom to continue the struggle against the Nazis. These pilots were, after a short period of retraining, and despite many problems of tactics and language, rushed into the Battle of Britain one month after their arrival in the UK.

After the Battle of Britain, this unit continued to operate against the Germans and performed well until the war’s end. However it was always restrained by a shortage of replacement pilots and occasionally it had to be based far from any German aerial activity to avoid irreplaceable losses.

Like all the booklets of this series, it is divided into three parts, history, appendices (comprising all the claims, losses including accidental, awards, maps and the operational diary) and pilot's roster. Almost 170 pilots were either posted, or attached, to this unit including five British, one New Zealander, one Rhodesian and one Pole. This publication is a complete history of the squadron and it is illustrated by more than 100 photos and colour profiles (some being available for free downloading). 96 pages.

Aeroplane monthly - SEPTEMBER 2007

Another of this publisher's condensed pictorial histories of a Second World War fighter unit, this time turning the spotlight on 310 Sqn RAF, one of the "300-series" of squadrons whihc were manned by pilots from Continental European countries overrun by the Nazis. The first such squadron for Czechoslovakian pilots, 310 Sqn was formed at Duxford on July 10, 1940, initially equipped with Hawker Hurricanes. At the end of 1941, it began converting to Supermarine Spitfires, operating these until the war's end. The pilots flew back to their native country in August 1945, 310 Sqn was officially disbanded on February 16, 1946, and the unit formed the basis of the 1st Air Division of the Czech Air Force's 10th Fighter Regiment.
This slim, weel-illustrated book contains a wartime history of the unit, numerous appendices providing operational data, aircraft serials and codes, an operational diary, claims and kills, and pilot biographies. Also included are seven colour artwork side elevations of specific machines.
